Orange County Board of Equalization and review rejects appeal
9-18-09 I recently received the decision from Orange County NC regarding the tax value of my home. My appeal was,of course, denied. For those of you who do not know about this fight, let me bring you up to speed.
My home and land was valued for taxation purposes at $220,823.00 by Orange county, and unless I wish to appeal it to the state, that is where the value will remain, until the next time Orange county can raise my taxes and get away with it. My wife and I added on to our home in 2008, having it appraised after the addition was finished. It was appraised at $205,000.00, home and land, in November 2008. Our tax bill from Orange County, NC in January 2009 showed a home value of $242,000.00. I along with many others in the county, objected to the inflated rates that seemed to be a common theme throughout the county. My written appeal, along with so many other appeals, caused Orange County to drop their tax rates from roughly 0.998 to 0.86 per $100.00, and they dropped the estimated value of my home to around $220,000.00. Since this was not the appraised value of my home, (which would be considered a fair market value should I choose to sell it) I appealed in person in August. That appeal was denied, as I previously stated.
So the question is, where does a person go form this point? Once you've made your objections, written appeals, appealed in person, and denied, what do you do next? My first suggestion is that you take a good look at the names of the county commissioners above. Remember them. Write to them frequently, and when you see their names on a ballot, vote for the other person. Do not sit idly by and accept the decisions of the tyrants in government, who have a sense of entitlement to your money. I am not an anarchist, and am not opposed to taxes. I am, however, opposed to being taxed excessively. To point a gun at someone and take something that belongs to them is stealing, and is punishable by jail time. To take something that belongs to someone else in the name of the government is still stealing, but your government expects you to accept it. Don't accept it.
Thomas Paine once said that government in it's best form is a necessary evil, and in it's worst form, an intolerable one. This is an example of an intolerable government.

Orange County considering charging at rural trash and recycling drop off centers...
10-17-09 Orange County government is considering charging an extra fee to residents to drop off their own trash and recyclables at the five rural locations, either by a fee per drop, a monthly, or a yearly fee to rural residents. Having lived in rural Orange county for twelve years, I have used one of those drop off "convenience centers". This has been and currently is staffed and maintained by our county taxes.
It appears as if this years fight over property taxes did nothing to educate our county government to the fact that we do not want any more tax increases. You can split hairs and argue that this is a "fee" and not a tax, however the fact remains that it is money out of the citizens' pocket, and is unacceptable. Even after the property tax fight and the subsequent reduction in tax rates, we still have a high tax rate in the county compared with the rest of the state. ( I believe the rate that was settled on was around 0.85 per 100.00, down from 0.997 per 100.00.) Added fees are unacceptable.
There is a survey online where you can voice your opinion regarding this issue. The Orange county voice has put together a "talkin' trash survey" to help the citizens voice their opinion and concerns. Take the survey, and be prepared for another fight with Orange County government for attempting to take more money out of your pocket. I'll watch this situation and keep you updated.
