Who were the "Sons of Liberty"?
During a debate in 1765 in the British parliament over the stamp act,  A man named Isacc Barre refered to American's who were opposed to the stamp act as "Sons of Liberty".  Secret radical groups in the colonies adopted this name and used it as they worked against the stamp act and other British acts that were designed to collect revenue from the colonies.  Initially the Sons of Liberty were largely organizers of protesters against government policies.  The Sons of Liberty remained a fixture of a very visible resistance to British rule and policies.  Members of the group played a prominent role in the formation of the Continental Congress in 1774.  The flag you see on the home page of this website is the flag used by the original "Sons of Liberty"
